Hot yoga walked into the Western fitness scene in 1972, when Bikram Choudhury opened his first studio in Beverly Hills with a 26-pose sequence done in a room heated to 105°F (40°C) at 40 percent humidity. Fifty years later, it's a global category — sometimes Bikram, often various studio-specific sequences, mostly run at temperatures between 90 and 105°F, with humidity ranging from desert-dry to swimming-pool wet.
The marketing claims have varied. Detoxification is the most common, weight loss the second, dramatic flexibility gains the third. The actual effects of practicing yoga in heat are more interesting than these claims, more limited than the pitch, and worth understanding before you sign up for a month of unlimited classes.
What's actually different about practicing in heat
Doing yoga in a 105-degree room is physiologically different from doing the same yoga in a 70-degree room. The differences are real and worth understanding.
Your body has to work to maintain core temperature within a narrow range — basically 97 to 99°F — regardless of ambient temperature. When the room is hotter than your skin, you can't lose heat through radiation; you have to lose it through evaporation of sweat. To produce that sweat, blood vessels near the skin dilate, cardiac output increases, and the heart rate rises significantly above what the same physical work would produce in a cool room.
The thermoregulatory load is substantial. A 2017 study by Tracy and Hart measured heart rate during Bikram yoga sessions and found average heart rates of around 130 beats per minute, with peaks well above that — significantly higher than the same sequence done at room temperature. The same study found core temperatures rising to as high as 103°F in some participants by the end of the 90-minute session.
This has cascading effects. Connective tissue is more elastic when warm, which is why heat is part of every physical therapist's toolkit. Pain perception shifts with heat, which makes intense postures feel different. The cardiovascular load makes hot yoga more strenuous than its appearance suggests, which is why people who feel like they did nothing in a regular yoga class come out of hot yoga genuinely tired.
These effects are not necessarily bad. They are different. Whether they're appropriate for you depends on what you're after, what your cardiovascular health looks like, and how well you tolerate heat.
The detox claim

The detoxification claim is the central marketing pitch of most hot yoga studios. It's also the easiest one to dismiss on biochemical grounds.
The body's actual detoxification systems are the liver and kidneys. The liver chemically transforms most fat-soluble compounds into water-soluble forms that can be excreted. The kidneys filter the blood and excrete waste through urine. The skin and the lungs handle smaller amounts of certain volatile compounds. None of these systems detoxify faster because you sweat more.
Sweat is roughly 99 percent water, with trace amounts of sodium, potassium, chloride, calcium, magnesium, lactic acid, urea, and a handful of small molecules. The amount of any of these that's eliminated through sweat is tiny compared to what the kidneys handle in normal urination. A person sweating heavily for 90 minutes might lose 1.5 liters of water, containing perhaps 50 mg of urea — compared to the 25 to 30 grams of urea the kidneys excrete daily as part of normal function.
A 2011 study by Genuis and others tested sweat for various environmental contaminants and found small amounts of certain heavy metals (cadmium, lead) in some samples. This got picked up by the wellness press as evidence that sweat detoxifies. The actual amounts were tiny, the study was small, and a follow-up understanding hasn't supported the broader claim that sweating is a meaningful detoxification pathway. Your kidneys do the work.
This matters because the detox framing is the reason many people overdo hot yoga, push through symptoms of heat stress, and avoid drinking enough water during class to "let the toxins out." All of these are bad ideas. The benefits of hot yoga are real but they don't come from sweating out toxins. They come from cardiovascular load, increased flexibility, mental focus, and the discipline of staying with discomfort.
The flexibility question
The flexibility effects are real and probably the most legitimate selling point of hot yoga.
Heat increases the extensibility of connective tissue. Studies in physical therapy have measured this directly: passive range of motion increases when the tissue is warm, both from external heat (heat packs, ultrasound) and from elevated core temperature from exercise. The effect is short-term, lasting about an hour after the heat is removed, and the gains are partly a temporary tissue effect and partly a neural effect — warm muscles allow more stretch tolerance.
In a hot yoga class, this means you'll get into postures that are out of reach in your room-temperature practice. The seated forward fold goes deeper. The pigeon pose feels less aggressive. The backbends open more. This is real and feels good.
It is also the source of the most common hot yoga injuries. The reason your normal yoga practice has the range of motion it has is that your protective end-range — the point where the nervous system tells you to stop — has adapted to your tissue's tolerance. When heat moves that end-range, you can suddenly go further. If your tissue isn't actually conditioned for the new range, you can produce small injuries that don't show up until later, when the heat has worn off and you're trying to walk normally.
The honest framing: hot yoga gives you temporary access to range you don't actually own. Whether this is useful depends on what you do with it. If you treat the increased range as a chance to gradually train into new positions, with attention and progression, it can accelerate flexibility development. If you treat it as your new normal range and try to push past it, you can hurt yourself.
For people genuinely interested in flexibility, hot yoga can be a useful supplement. For most casual practitioners, the regular practice with appropriate warmup will get you most of the way without the heat risks.
Calories, weight loss, and water weight
The energy cost of a 90-minute hot yoga class is meaningful but often overstated.
A 2013 study by McCall measured oxygen consumption during a Bikram session and found average energy expenditure of around 460 calories for women and 500 calories for men, with substantial individual variation. This is comparable to a 90-minute brisk walk or a 60-minute moderate cycling session. It is not the 1,000+ calories that some studios claim.
The dramatic weight loss many people report immediately after a class — sometimes 2 to 5 pounds — is water weight. Sweat losses of 1.5 to 2 liters during a hot yoga class translate to 3 to 4 pounds of body weight, and that weight returns within a few hours of normal hydration. This is not fat loss. The scale change is real but temporary and doesn't reflect changes in body composition.
For actual fat loss, the relevant variable is total energy balance. Hot yoga can contribute as part of an overall caloric deficit, but it doesn't have any special metabolic property that makes it superior to other forms of exercise. The "fat burning zone" claims you'll see in some studio marketing don't reflect the science of fat metabolism, which is too complicated to summarize in a heart rate range.
If your goal is weight loss, hot yoga is fine as the exercise component but it isn't magic. Most people who lose meaningful weight from starting hot yoga do so primarily because they're now exercising regularly and have generally cleaned up their eating in tandem with the practice. The exercise is part of the picture but not the whole picture.
Cardiovascular effects, real and overstated

The elevated heart rate during hot yoga produces some cardiovascular adaptation, particularly for people coming from a sedentary baseline. A 2013 study by Hunter and others followed sedentary adults through 8 weeks of three-times-weekly Bikram yoga and found small improvements in cardiovascular fitness markers, though smaller than equivalent time spent on dedicated aerobic exercise.
For trained cardiovascular athletes, hot yoga is unlikely to add much to fitness. The intensity is moderate, the work is mostly isometric, and the cardiovascular load comes more from heat dissipation than from the kind of sustained aerobic challenge that builds VO2 max or endurance.
Some heat acclimatization benefits do carry over to other sports. Athletes who train in heat develop expanded plasma volume, more efficient sweating, and improved tolerance to heat stress. These adaptations transfer to outdoor sports in hot weather. If you're training for a hot-weather event, hot yoga can be a useful component of heat acclimatization, though sport-specific heat training is more efficient.
For people with elevated cardiovascular risk — uncontrolled hypertension, recent cardiac events, certain arrhythmias — the cardiovascular load of hot yoga can be problematic. The combination of heat stress, dehydration, and elevated heart rate puts demand on the system that may exceed what's safe. Anyone in this category should clear hot yoga with their cardiologist before starting.
Who should be careful, who should not do this at all
A few populations and situations where hot yoga isn't appropriate, or requires caution.
Pregnant women
Generally not recommended after the first trimester. Elevated maternal core temperature has been associated with neural tube defects in early pregnancy, and the risk of dehydration and orthostatic hypotension is elevated throughout pregnancy. Most obstetricians advise against hot yoga during pregnancy regardless of trimester.
People with cardiovascular disease. As above. Get cleared first.
People on certain medications
Diuretics, beta-blockers, antihistamines, and several others affect thermoregulation or hydration. Anything that affects sweating, blood pressure regulation, or fluid balance deserves a check with your physician.
People with multiple sclerosis
Heat exacerbates MS symptoms in many patients. Hot yoga is generally a bad idea for this population.
People prone to dehydration or syncope
If you faint easily, get lightheaded standing up, or have a history of heat illness, hot yoga is a high-risk environment. Cooler practice is the better choice.
Beginners with no heat acclimatization
First-time hot yoga should always be approached cautiously. Lie down if you feel symptoms of heat stress (lightheadedness, nausea, ringing in the ears, weakness, hot dry skin instead of sweating). Leave the room if needed. The studio culture sometimes discourages this, but the body's signals are correct.
Anyone feeling sick
Practicing in heat with any illness, fever, or significant dehydration is a bad idea. Skip the class.
Hydration and electrolytes the right way

Drinking water before, during, and after hot yoga is not optional. The hydration approach matters.
Before class: drink about 16 to 20 ounces (500 to 600 ml) of water in the two hours leading up to class. Don't try to load up in the last 15 minutes — your stomach won't absorb it that fast and you'll feel sloshy in poses.
During class: small sips as needed, particularly during the more intense portions. You don't need to drink huge amounts during class; the priority is replacing major losses afterward.
After class: this is where most people underdo it. A 90-minute class typically produces 1 to 2 liters of sweat losses. Replacing this requires drinking that much water, plus a little extra (the urine concentrating mechanism doesn't fully reset for several hours after dehydration). A simple test: weigh yourself before and after class. The pound difference is roughly 16 ounces of fluid you need to replace.
Electrolytes matter. Sweat losses include sodium, potassium, magnesium, and calcium in significant amounts. If you're doing hot yoga regularly, replacing only the water and not the electrolytes can produce hyponatremia (low blood sodium), which causes fatigue, nausea, headaches, and in severe cases more dangerous symptoms. After class, an electrolyte drink, salty food, or just adequate sodium intake at your next meal addresses this. Coconut water is fine but not magic. An electrolyte tablet or powder in a glass of water works.
The "drink to thirst" advice that sometimes circulates in the wellness press isn't quite right for hot yoga regulars. Thirst is a lagging indicator and often doesn't activate strongly enough to fully replace heavy sweat losses. A small habit of weighing yourself and drinking accordingly is more reliable.
How to evaluate a hot yoga studio
Studios vary significantly. A few things worth checking.
What temperature do they actually run? Bikram is 105°F at 40 percent humidity. Other hot yoga styles vary from 90°F to 105°F. The lower-temperature studios are generally safer for beginners and people with heat sensitivity. The 105-degree studios produce the most extreme effects.
Is the room properly humidified or just hot? Some studios crank the heat without managing humidity, which produces a dry-sauna effect that's actually harder on the body than the standard moist-heat environment. Ask.
What's the air circulation like? Studios with poor ventilation produce stagnant, oxygen-depleted air. You'll feel it within five minutes. Look for studios with active air management.
Can you leave the room if needed? Some studio cultures (Bikram in particular) discourage students from leaving during class. This is a problem. You should always be able to step out if you feel symptoms of heat stress, without judgment from teachers.
Are teachers actually attentive to safety? Watch a class before you sign up if possible. Are teachers walking the room, watching students, offering modifications? Or are they at the front delivering the script and ignoring the people in front of them? The first is what you want.
Does the studio sell unlimited beginner packages? These can encourage overdoing it. Going to hot yoga every day for two weeks because you bought the deal is more risk than benefit. Three times a week is plenty for almost anyone, particularly when starting.
